FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ)

1.What is Hajj Al-Badl and Umrah Al-Badl ?

Hajj Al-Badl and Umrah Al-Badl is from the authentic Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ to benefit a Muslim with divine reward. A sane, adult male or female Muslim is delegated to perform Hajj or Umrah rituals on behalf of another Muslim who deceased, disabled or ill.

2.Is it allowed in Islam to perform Hajj or Umrah on behalf of a fellow Muslim?

Yes. The act of performing, or delegating someone else, to perform Umrah on behalf of a fellow Muslim is confirmed from various authentic narrations of the Prophet ﷺ.
The scholars are unanimous that it is permissible to delegate someone to perform Hajj or Umrah on behalf of a fellow Muslim subject to certain conditions being fulfilled. Please refer to questions 3 & 4 for the conditions.

📖 Hadith 1:

A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: “O Messenger of Allah, my father is an old man and cannot perform Hajj or Umrah, nor can he travel.” The Prophet ﷺ said: “Perform Hajj and Umrah on behalf of your father.” (Sunan al-Nasa’i)

📖 Hadith 2:

A woman from the tribe of Juhainah came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: “My mother had vowed to perform Hajj but she died before fulfilling it. Should I perform Hajj on her behalf?” The Prophet ﷺ replied: “Yes, fulfil her debt to Allah, for Allah is more deserving of having debts fulfilled.” (Bukhari & Muslim)

📖 Hadith 3:

Ibn Abbas (RA) reported: A woman asked the Prophet ﷺ: “The obligation of Hajj has come upon my father while he is old and cannot ride. Should I perform Hajj on his behalf?” The Prophet ﷺ said: “Yes.” (Sahih Muslim)

3.On whose behalf can Hajj or Umrah be performed?

a)A deceased Muslim, male or female, young or old.
b)A Muslim who is ill or disabled and thus physically incapable of performing the rites of Hajj or Umrah themselves.

4.Can a person who is financially unable to perform Hajj or Umrah delegate someone to perform it on their behalf?

No, this is not permissible.
Similarly, it is not permissible to perform Hajj or Umrah on behalf of living person who is able to perform it themselves.

5.What qualifications are required for the delegated person to perform the Hajj or Umrah Al-Badl?

a)The performer must be a sane adult Muslim, male or female.
b)The performer must have performed Hajj (in the case of Hajj Al-Badl) or Umrah (in the case of Umrah Al-Badl) previously.
c)The performer must know the various rules and regulations regarding Hajj and Umrah.
d)The performer’s intention must be to perform Hajj or Umrah on behalf of the stipulated beneficiary and not on behalf of himself or anyone else.

e)The mentioning of the beneficiary’s name together with the intention of Hajj or Umrah must be verbally stated at the time of entering the state of Ihram.

6.Can a single Hajj Al-Badl or Umrah Al-Badl be performed for multiple people?

No. Each Hajj or Umrah can only be done on behalf of a single person.

7.Is it permissible to perform Hajj or Umrah on behalf of the same person more than once?

Yes. This is permissible if the conditions still apply at each time.

8.How does Cii verify that the Hajj or Umrah is completed as requested?

Cii has partnered with an official Saudi Arabian Government approved organisation, based in Makkah, that supervises over the completion of the required rites from the commencement until the end and in ‘real time’. Furthermore, stringent vetting and checks are placed upon those performing the rites to ensure that they are qualified and reliable.

9.Will I know when the Hajj or Umrah is completed?

Yes. Cii will notify you accordingly and issue a completion certificate confirming the completion of the Hajj or Umrah as requested. Please allow some time for the certificates to be issued and sent to your e-mail.

10.Can I request an Umrah Al-Badl to be performed throughout the year?

Yes. Umrah Al-Badl may be requested at any time throughout the year. One may even stipulate a preferred time and date.
