Kashmir residents have gathered outside a police building in Srinagar to protest Tuesday’s attack, calling on the government to act, India’s ANI news agency reports.

“This is not just murder – it is the murder of humanity, and we will not forgive it,” one demonstrator told ANI.

“Hindu, Muslim, Sikh or Christian – this is about human life. Don’t point fingers at each other,” another protester told the agency.

As investigators probe Kashmir’s worst suspected rebel attack in decades, many shops and businesses in Srinagar held a shutdown to protest the killings following a call from the region’s religious and political parties.

What happened in the attack?

Suspected rebels carried out the attack in the picturesque tourist resort of Pahalgam in the southern district of Anantnag, raising fears of an escalation in tensions between India and neighbouring Pakistan, which controls another part of Kashmir but, like India, claims the region in its entirety.

The attack has prompted anger across India as it came amid the peak tourist season, as hundreds of thousands of tourists are holidaying in the region, which has been racked by a three-decade armed rebellion.
