Trump’s 25 percent tariffs on Canada and Mexico have officially come into effect. Washington has also imposed an additional 10 percent levy on Chinese imports, adding to the 10 percent imposed last month.
Canada says it will hit back with 25 percent tariffs on the US – also set to come into effect on Tuesday – while China has responded with duties on US goods, including soybeans, wheat, corn and cotton.
Speaking at the White House on Monday, President Trump said he had called the leaders of China and Japan to “say you can’t continue to reduce and break down your currency”.
“You can’t do it because it’s unfair to us. It’s very hard for us to make tractors, Caterpillar here, when Japan, China and other places are killing their currency, meaning driving it down,” he said.
Trump warned he could impose tariffs to make up for the disadvantage US manufacturers face.
Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba told parliament on Tuesday Japan was not pursuing a “currency devaluation policy” and he had received no phone call from Trump on the matter.
