A town in Saskatchewan, Canada, is facing a significant challenge ahead of its November municipal election: no candidates have emerged to run for mayor.
Officials in Kyle announced that Mayor George Williams, who has served since November 2021, is retiring this year, yet no one has stepped forward to take his place. Additionally, an open seat on the Town Council also lacks nominees.
Chief Administrative Officer Amber Dashney mentioned that two rounds of applications have been issued in search of a mayoral candidate, but so far, there have been no takers.
“It’s a bit concerning, but I believe someone will come forward,” Dashney told reporters.
She added that if no candidates run for mayor in the Nov. 13 election, the council will appoint a deputy mayor to fulfill the responsibilities of the position.
“At that meeting, we will also set a date for a by-election, and we will continue to call for by-elections until we fill both the mayoral position and the vacant council seat,” Dashney said.
