The N2 northbound carriageway between Umzinto and Umgababa on the South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal is now open to traffic.
The South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) said in a statement on Wednesday that the road was damaged during the April floods in KwaZulu-Natal.
Sanral’s eastern regional manager, Dumisani Nkabinde, said the road had undergone thorough project completion inspection and they have satisfied themselves as Sanral that all the requirements, especially road safety features were met.
“The deviation is one lane only which is a temporary measure to allow mobility and take pressure away from the R197 and R102,” said Nkabinde.
Permanent reconstruction of the affected section of the N2 was underway and the engineers were currently busy with geotechnical investigations to finalise a detailed design for the permanent repairs.
President Cyril Ramaphosa declared the national state of disaster on April 18 following the floods in KwaZulu-Natal.
