Four dangerous prisoners escaped from Rooigrond Prison, near Mahikeng, in the North West on Tuesday, the Department of Correctional Services said.
The inmates have been identified as:
- Zacharia Francisco Nyalimate, a Mozambican man convicted for house breaking and murder. He is serving 27 years.
- Alfred Gwambe, a Mozambican convicted for house breaking, theft and possession of a stolen vehicle. He is serving 65 years.
- Siyabonga Sithole, a South African convicted for rape, theft and house breaking and serving a life sentence.
- Edward Madiba, a South African convicted for robbery, possession of a firearm and serving 15 years.
Prison authorities are unsure how the prisoners managed to get over the inward-leaning fence at the perimeter, which is apparently very difficult to climb over, though ropes were found nearby.
