GBV has been called the second pandemic South Africa is facing at the same time as the COVID-19 pandemic. Everyday, South African media covers stories about women and children who have been physically, emotionally, and sexually abused at the hands of perpetrators known and unknown. Do we, citizens of the country, do enough to stop the scourge or are we maybe perpetuating it? Bonolo Mahlatsi, a master’s student in Sociology at the University of the Free State and a budding academic has written an op-ed titled “The problem with mourning COVID-19 and GBV concurrently.”
