People wanting to go for hajj or umrah will now have to undergo biometric fingerprint and facial recognition registration.

Saudi embassies abroad have started taking biometrics of Umrah visa applicants following a new measure that came into effect from the beginning of the new Islamic year.

The move comes after a decision by the Saudi government to ensure the safety and security of pilgrims coming to the Kingdom for Haj and Umrah.

The kingdom hopes that the use of biometric registration will cut down waiting time at immigration counters and in turn offer better service to visa applicants.

Previously the measure was applied on pilgrims from a few countries. According to reports the biometric verification system will be implemented from November 05, and will apply to travellers within the ages of 12 and 70.
