The South African Communist Party (SACP) now has to decide whether to go through with a threat to withdraw its members from the cabinet now that Pravin Gordhan and his Deputy Mcebisi Jonas have been fired.

This follows the reshuffle announced by President Jacob Zuma on Thursday night, in which he axed five ministers and named ten new ministers and deputy ministers.

In a cabinet reshuffle which resulted in the sacking of Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan and his Deputy Mcebisi Jonas, none of those seen as close to President Zuma were fired.

Social Development Minister Bathabile Dlamini and former Communications Minister Faith Muthambi, who has now been moved to Public Service Administration, have been retained.

For now it’s not clear that the SACP deployees in Cabinet, Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande, Public Works Deputy Minister Jeremy Cronin, Sport Minister Thulas Nxesi, Trade and Industry Rob Davies, Economic Development Minister Ebrahim Patel will resign in protest of the firing of both Gordhan and Jonas.

The SACP has announced its intention to recall its deployees should President Zuma sack Gordhan and Jonas.
