The third of four Desai siblings held in a jail in Saudi Arabia since last year has returned home.

It has been an agonising time for Waseeullah Desai, who was held for 14 months without charge.

The Desai siblings were in solitary confinement for the first three months, barred from having any contact with their family.

However, the family’s ordeal is not yet over, as their youngest sibling is still in detention with no clear indication of when she will be released.

“It’s a great experience to be home, to see family and the celebrations are great. I was promised release 6 months ago, but things and procedures kept coming up. It went on until one year and two months,” he says.

The family says it will continue to exhaust all avenues until they are all home.

“We actually don’t know what more to do. We are very thankful to the media, we have been in contact with government, and government says that they cannot break the rules in another country, they must go through diplomatic channels, ” says his older sister Huda Mohammed Desai.

The family will maintain contact with the South African embassy in Saudi Arabia but all they can do for now is pray and hope the lengthy ordeal will come to an end.
