Multimedia attached to tweets will not be included as part of the 140-character count from later this month. As of September 19, images, polls, gifs and videos will not reduce the character count in a tweet.

In addition to this, mentioning another Twitter handle will also not reduce the character count, the company has said.

The changes to the microblog will come into effect after Twitter’s announcement in May this year.
“For instance, @names in replies and media attachments (like photos, GIFs, videos, and polls) will no longer ‘use up’ valuable characters,” Twitter said in an earlier blog post.

When the changes come into effect, while replying to a Tweet, Twitter handles will also no longer count toward the 140-character count.

A ‘Retweet’ and ‘Quote’ button will also be included in user’s own tweet to be able to easily retweet oneself.
The social network will also say goodbye to the “.@” currently used to broadcast tweets broadly.

New Tweets that begin with a username will now reach all Twitter user’s followers.
“The updates have a significant impact on Tweets, so we want to provide our developer partners with time to make any needed updates to the hundreds of thousands of products built using Twitter’s API,” Twitter said.

In 2015, Twitter removed the 140-character limit from their direct messages, introduced polls and reintroduced the “like” as a “heart”.
