The Qur’anic portrait of the Beloved Messenger ﷺ
Among all the human beings who have walked upon the earth, none occupies a position like that of Muhammad ﷺ. He was the final Messenger of Allah, the bearer of the final revelation, and the guide through whom Allah showed humanity the path to faith, righteousness and salvation.
When we speak of the perfection of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, we must be careful to distinguish between what the Qur’an actually says and expressions that are later used by scholars and believers to describe his lofty rank. The Qur’an does not use the English phrase “perfect human being” as a title. Rather, it gives us something far greater: Allah Himself describes the Messenger ﷺ, commands believers to follow his example, praises his character, and describes his mission as a mercy to the worlds.
The Qur’anic portrait is therefore the foundation upon which our love and reverence for Muhammad ﷺ rests.
“Indeed, in the Messenger of Allah you have an excellent example”
One of the clearest Qur’anic descriptions of the Messenger ﷺ is found in Surah al-Ahzab:
لَّقَدْ كَانَ لَكُمْ فِى رَسُولِ ٱللَّهِ أُسْوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌۭ لِّمَن كَانَ يَرْجُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَٱلْيَوْمَ ٱلْـَٔاخِرَ وَذَكَرَ ٱللَّهَ كَثِيرًۭا
“Indeed, in the Messenger of Allah you have an excellent example for whoever has hope in Allah and the Last Day, and remembers Allah often.”
— Qur’an, Surah al-Ahzab 33:21
The expression “uswatun hasanah”—an excellent example—is extraordinarily significant. Allah does not merely tell Muslims that Muhammad ﷺ was a good person. He presents the Messenger ﷺ as an example to be followed.
His worship, patience, courage, mercy, leadership, family life, dealings with people and complete submission to Allah provide a model for believers.
The verse also connects following the Messenger ﷺ with three qualities: hope in Allah, belief in the Last Day, and abundant remembrance of Allah. The life of Muhammad ﷺ therefore demonstrates what these qualities look like when they are lived by a human being.
“And indeed, you are of a great moral character”
Perhaps the most profound Qur’anic testimony to the character of Muhammad ﷺ appears in Surah al-Qalam:
وَإِنَّكَ لَعَلَىٰ خُلُقٍ عَظِيمٍۢ
“And indeed, you are of a great moral character.”

This is not the praise of a historian, companion or later admirer. It is the declaration of Allah.
The Qur’an describes the Messenger ﷺ as possessing khuluqin ‘azim—a tremendous, magnificent and exalted character.
His perfection was therefore not merely in appearance, eloquence, leadership or worldly achievement. His greatness was rooted in his character.
He was the Messenger who showed truthfulness when truthfulness was costly, patience when patience was difficult, forgiveness when retaliation was possible, humility despite his exalted rank, and mercy even when dealing with those who opposed him.
The Qur’an itself establishes the foundation: “you are of a great moral character.”
A mercy to the worlds
The Qur’an gives another extraordinary description of the Messenger ﷺ:
وَمَآ أَرْسَلْنَـٰكَ إِلَّا رَحْمَةًۭ لِّلْعَـٰلَمِينَ
“And We have not sent you, [O Muhammad], except as a mercy to the worlds.”
— Qur’an, Surah al-Anbiya 21:107
Notice the breadth of the Qur’anic expression: “the worlds.”
The Messenger ﷺ was not sent merely as a political leader or teacher of a particular nation. His mission was universal.
His message called humanity to the worship of the One Allah, to justice, repentance, righteousness and salvation. Through him, Allah delivered the final revelation to humanity.
His mercy was therefore not weakness. It was mercy connected to guidance, truth and salvation.
His concern for his Ummah
The Qur’an gives us an intimate glimpse into the concern of the Messenger ﷺ for his people:
لَقَدْ جَآءَكُمْ رَسُولٌۭ مِّنْ أَنفُسِكُمْ عَزِيزٌ عَلَيْهِ مَا عَنِتُّمْ حَرِيصٌ عَلَيْكُم بِٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ رَءُوفٌۭ رَّحِيمٌۭ
“There has certainly come to you a Messenger from among yourselves. Grievous to him is what you suffer; he is concerned over you, and to the believers is kind and merciful.”
— Qur’an, Surah al-Tawbah 9:128
The verse portrays a Messenger ﷺ who genuinely cared about the welfare of his people.
Their suffering was grievous to him. He was deeply concerned for them. And towards the believers he was ra’uf and rahim—kind, compassionate and merciful.
This is one of the most beautiful Qur’anic descriptions of the heart of Muhammad ﷺ.
He did not seek the destruction of people. He sought their guidance.
Gentleness, forgiveness and consultation
Allah also describes the Messenger’s ﷺ manner with his companions:
فَبِمَا رَحْمَةٍۢ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ لِنتَ لَهُمْ ۖ وَلَوْ كُنتَ فَظًّۭا غَلِيظَ ٱلْقَلْبِ لَٱنفَضُّوا۟ مِنْ حَوْلِكَ ۖ فَٱعْفُ عَنْهُمْ وَٱسْتَغْفِرْ لَهُمْ وَشَاوِرْهُمْ فِى ٱلْأَمْرِ ۖ فَإِذَا عَزَمْتَ فَتَوَكَّلْ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ
“So, by mercy from Allah, you were gentle with them. Had you been rough and hard-hearted, they would have dispersed from around you. So pardon them, and seek forgiveness for them, and consult them in the matter. Then, when you have decided, put your trust in Allah.”
— Qur’an, Surah Aal ‘Imran 3:159
This verse reveals several dimensions of Prophetic perfection.
He was gentle.
He was not hard-hearted.
He forgave.
He sought forgiveness for others.
He consulted his companions.
And after making a decision, he placed his trust in Allah.
The Qur’an thus presents a model of leadership that combines mercy with strength, consultation with decisiveness, forgiveness with responsibility, and human effort with complete reliance upon Allah.
The Messenger ﷺ as the teacher of humanity
Allah says:
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّبِىُّ إِنَّآ أَرْسَلْنَـٰكَ شَـٰهِدًۭا وَمُبَشِّرًۭا وَنَذِيرًۭا وَدَاعِيًا إِلَى ٱللَّهِ بِإِذْنِهِۦ وَسِرَاجًۭا مُّنِيرًۭا
“O Prophet! Indeed, We have sent you as a witness, as a bearer of good news and a warner, and as one who invites to Allah by His permission, and as a lamp spreading light.”
— Qur’an, Surah al-Ahzab 33:45–46
The Messenger ﷺ fulfilled many roles simultaneously.
He was a witness, a bearer of good news, a warner, a caller to Allah, and a “lamp spreading light.”
His mission was to illuminate the path to Allah.
Yet the light was not his own divinity—Allah forbid. Muhammad ﷺ was the servant and Messenger of Allah. His greatness lies precisely in his perfect servitude to his Creator and his complete obedience to divine revelation.
His obedience to Allah
The Qur’an repeatedly establishes that the Messenger ﷺ must be followed because obedience to him is obedience to Allah:
مَّن يُطِعِ ٱلرَّسُولَ فَقَدْ أَطَاعَ ٱللَّهَ
“Whoever obeys the Messenger has truly obeyed Allah.”
— Qur’an, Surah al-Nisa 4:80
This is one of the reasons his example is so important.
Muhammad ﷺ did not call humanity towards himself as an independent object of worship. He called humanity towards Allah.
The Qur’an records him saying:
قُلْ إِن كُنتُمْ تُحِبُّونَ ٱللَّهَ فَٱتَّبِعُونِى يُحْبِبْكُمُ ٱللَّهُ
“Say, ‘If you love Allah, then follow me; Allah will love you.’”
— Qur’an, Surah Aal ‘Imran 3:31
Love for Allah is therefore inseparable from following His Messenger ﷺ.
The Messenger ﷺ and the believers
The Qur’an also describes the extraordinary relationship between Muhammad ﷺ and those who believed in him:
مُّحَمَّدٌۭ رَّسُولُ ٱللَّهِ ۚ وَٱلَّذِينَ مَعَهُۥٓ أَشِدَّآءُ عَلَى ٱلْكُفَّارِ رُحَمَآءُ بَيْنَهُمْ
“Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah; and those with him are forceful against the disbelievers and merciful among themselves.”
— Qur’an, Surah al-Fath 48:29
The verse begins with the simple yet majestic declaration:
“Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.”
His identity is inseparable from his prophethood.
The Qur’an then portrays the community formed around him as one marked by faith, devotion, worship and mercy.
Perfection without exaggeration
Loving Muhammad ﷺ does not mean attributing divinity to him.
The Qur’an itself teaches us the correct balance. Allah says:
قُلْ إِنَّمَآ أَنَا۠ بَشَرٌۭ مِّثْلُكُمْ يُوحَىٰٓ إِلَىَّ
“Say, ‘I am only a man like you, to whom it has been revealed that your God is only One God.’”
— Qur’an, Surah al-Kahf 18:110
Muhammad ﷺ was a human being—but he was the Messenger of Allah, chosen to receive revelation and entrusted with the greatest mission given to humanity.
Thus, the Sunni understanding maintains the balance established by the Qur’an: we love, honour and follow Muhammad ﷺ without worshipping him.
He is Allah’s servant and Messenger.
The Qur’an’s testimony is enough
When all these verses are brought together, an extraordinary picture emerges.
Allah calls him:
- an excellent example — Qur’an 33:21;
- a man of great moral character — Qur’an 68:4;
- a mercy to the worlds — Qur’an 21:107;
- kind and merciful to the believers — Qur’an 9:128;
- gentle rather than harsh-hearted — Qur’an 3:159;
- a witness, bearer of good news and warner — Qur’an 33:45;
- a caller to Allah and a lamp spreading light — Qur’an 33:46;
- and explicitly the Messenger of Allah — Qur’an 48:29.
These are not exaggerated descriptions invented by later generations. They are Qur’anic descriptions.
The most powerful testimony, however, may be the simplest:
وَإِنَّكَ لَعَلَىٰ خُلُقٍ عَظِيمٍۢ
“And indeed, you are of a great moral character.”
— Qur’an 68:4
The Qur’an itself directs us towards Muhammad ﷺ as the example of how a human being should live.
Following the Beloved ﷺ
The true tribute to Muhammad ﷺ is not merely to speak about him. It is to follow him.
If the Qur’an calls him an excellent example, then we should examine our own character.
If the Qur’an describes him as merciful, we should become more merciful.
If the Qur’an describes him as gentle, we should become gentler.
If the Qur’an shows that he forgave others, we should learn to forgive.
If the Qur’an shows his complete reliance upon Allah, we should strengthen our tawakkul.
If the Qur’an commands us to follow him, then our love should manifest itself in obedience.
The Messenger ﷺ was the perfect example of what it means to surrender oneself completely to Allah.
His greatness was not merely that he spoke about Islam.
He lived it.
His life demonstrated the Qur’an in human form: worship, mercy, patience, courage, justice, forgiveness, humility, sacrifice and unwavering devotion to Allah.
And therefore, when Muslims honour Muhammad ﷺ, they are not simply remembering a great historical personality. They are remembering the Messenger whom Allah Himself commanded humanity to follow.
May Allah increase our love for His beloved Messenger Muhammad ﷺ, grant us the ability to follow his Sunnah sincerely, beautify our character with the qualities he embodied, and gather us with him in Jannatul Firdaus.
