As the G20 summit reaches its peak this weekend, a group of art-loving Palestinian activists in Johannesburg are racing against time — painting murals of resistance and remembrance along Marlboro Drive.
“Art is a form of expression that speaks louder than words — especially when lives are at stake,”* says **Sufyaan Mohamed, one of the volunteers coordinating the project.
The walls, positioned just beyond the Gautrain fence near the Southway Road intersection, were chosen for their visibility. “Delegations will pass through here — it’s a powerful and prominent canvas,” Sufyaan explains.
Murals will depict children, flags, and symbols of Gaza, Sudan, Congo, and the Rohingya. “These murals carry messages of remembrance, urgency and solidarity. They’re meant to transform the daily commute into a shared call for peace and accountability.”
Volunteers have only three days to complete the work. “People want to start tonight. Some after work. Everyone’s volunteering their time — there’s excitement,” Sufyaan adds.
The project — spearheaded by Muslim Action for Palestine — is a **collective effort of groups including the Global Movement Team, Social Intifada, Community with a Conscience, and Jewish Voice for Peace.
“Let’s make this happen,” says Sufyaan. “One wall at a time.”
