A New Zealand airport has implemented a three-minute limit on hugs in its drop-off zone, instructing anyone who needs a longer farewell to use the car park instead.

Dunedin International Airport, located on the South Island, introduced this rule last month as part of a wider initiative to enhance safety and maintain traffic flow in the area, according to local media.

Dan De Bono, the airport’s chief executive, explained the rationale behind the change during an interview with Radio New Zealand (RNZ). He noted that typical warnings in drop-off zones are often harsh and can include threats of fines or wheel clamps, which the airport aimed to avoid.

“We want to keep it lighthearted. Airports are emotional places for farewells,” De Bono said. “However, some people were taking too long, leaving little space for others. Our goal is to ensure everyone has a chance to share their hugs.”
