Days of driving unfit and un-roadworthy vehicles on South African roads will soon be a thing of the past. This is according to Transport Minister Dipuo Peters, who unveiled nine mobile vehicle testing and Weighbridge equipment in Pretoria on Tuesday. The mobile testing stations, one for each province, will enable law enforcement officers to do their jobs better and come at a cost of R3 million rand each.

The mobile testing stations can test braking systems and faulty lights and steering wheel functions, enabling traffic officers to conduct impromptu vehicle testing exercises.

“The day of driving unfit vehicles is coming to an end,” Peters said. She revealed that in cases of fatal accidents, unroadworthy vehicles were the leading cause. The Transport Ministry also paraded over 200 new traffic police recruits. Turning the tide on corruption at Weighbridge and vehicle testing centers.

According to the Road Traffic Management Corporation, trainee metro police officers will undergo a three year training program from next year onwards. Minister Dipou Peters urged the traffic officers to resist temptation to accept bribes and that they should enforce the law without fear, favour or prejudice.

“If you accept a bribe you are an embarrassment to God your creator and to your family. When they write about you in the newspaper they use your surname and it tarnishes your family name,” Peters said.
She announced that all traffic officers in all provinces would wear identical uniforms and the vehicles used would also be branded in the same way.
