Jerusalem — Dozens of Palestinians were shot and injured by live ammunition or rubber-coated steel bullets in the town of al-Ram in the Jerusalem district of the occupied West Bank Wednesday morning — on the fourth consecutive day of violent raids into al-Ram since a resident of the town carried out a deadly shooting attack in East Jerusalem on Sunday and was shot dead on the scene.
State-run news agency Wafa reported that a large number of Israeli army vehicles raided the the town, provoking clashes with local Palestinian youth who then threw stones at Israeli soldiers’ vehicles.
The Israeli army responded by firing live ammunition, rubber-coated steel bullets, and tear gas canisters to disperse the protesters, causing multiple cases of gunshot injures and severe tear gas inhalation, according to Wafa.
An Israeli army spokesperson told Ma’an they were looking into reports of the clashes.
After Jerusalemite Palestinian Misbah Abu Sbeih carried out a deadly shooting attack in occupied East Jerusalem on Sunday, which left an Israeli police officer and an Israeli woman killed, Israeli forces have violently raided al-Ram every day since to detain members of the slain attacker’s family and ransack their properties.
As a result of the violent nature of the raids, locals have protested outside of the targeted homes, leading to clashes with Israeli forces.
Seven young Palestinian men were injured on Sunday during clashes hours after Abu Sbeih was killed — including an Associated Press photographer who was covering clashes.
During a raid on Monday, Israeli soldiers took measurements of Abu Sbeih’s home in preparation to punitively demolish it.
During a predawn raid on Tuesday into a a building owned by the Abu Sbeih family, soldiers rounded up all family members in one room at gunpoint, while four Palestinian youth were shot and injured in al-Ram during clashes later Tuesday evening.
Meanwhile, Israeli forces shot and killed a 20-year-old Palestinian Tuesday night when clashes erupted between Palestinian youth and Israeli forces in Silwan, where Abu Sbeih had lived before Israeli authorities banned him from the Jerusalem municipality, forcing him to move to al-Ram.
Clashes in al-Ram and Silwan came amid extreme security measures and closures across the occupied territory and in East Jerusalem in particular amid the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur, severely restricting the movement of Palestinians.
