Britain’s Muslim Council has filed a request for an official inquiry into Islamophobia in the British Prime Minister’s Conservative Party, amid claims of Islamophobia, it was announced on Thursday.
The council, an independent body that represents more than 500 mosques, schools and associations in Britain, wrote to the party chair, requesting a full audit “to ensure racists and bigots have no place” in the Conservative party.
The request comes after what the Muslim Council says was “the latest in a consistent stream of Islamophobic incidents from Bob Blackman… without any action being taken.”
“No action has been taken against Bob Blackman MP who has now shown a consistent record of endorsing Islamophobia,” Secretary General of the Muslim Council, Harun Khan said, adding that Blackman was not the only party member who has fostered Islamophobia in the party.
In April there were more than weekly occurrences of Islamophobia from candidates and representatives of the Conservative Party, Khan claimed.
The organization urged the party chair to launch of an independent inquiry, publishing a list of incidents of Islamophobia within the party where action has been taken, as well as adopting a program of education and training on Islamophobia.
“Our democracy should not be overshadowed by a divisive culture within political parties that scapegoat’s minorities and alienates some who share similar political positions,” Khan stated.
