The Syrian Network for Human Rights has documented the cases of 232 people killed last year while being tortured by the main actors of the conflict in Syria. Of these, 211, including one child and two women, were tortured to death by the Syrian regime.
In a report issued on Tuesday, the organisation gave details of one person tortured to death by Daesh, and four people, including a child, killed under torture by Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham. Furthermore, seven people were killed in this way by armed opposition factions; five were killed by the Kurdish autonomous region forces; and four by other parties.
The Network noted that a majority of the victims were from Damascus and its suburbs, with 46 known victims, followed closely by Daraa with 42; Aleppo with 31; 29 in Idlib; 25 in Homs; 20 in Deir Al-Zour; 15 in Hama; 9 in Lattakia; 6 in Raqqa; 5 in Hasakah; 2 in Suwayda; and 1 in Quneitra. At least one non-Syrian was among the victims.
The report called on the Russian guarantor to abide by the de-escalation agreements and put pressure on its allies in the Syrian and Iranian regimes to stop all forms of killing, bombing and torture to death in detention centres, and start to release detainees. This is one file, it added, that has not seen any significant improvement.
